21700 vs 18650 in a battery case: how many fewer cells fit
Short answer: the same empty housing holds around 20 to 32 % fewer 21700 cells than 18650 cells. A Hailong-pattern case that takes 117 on 18650 takes 80 on 21700. If you are building on 21700, never order against the 18650 figure.

This is the most expensive mistake in the category, because the listing is not lying — it is answering a different question from the one you asked. "Takes up to 117 cells" is true. It is just true for 18650.
Why the difference is so large
A 21700 cell is 21 mm across; an 18650 is 18 mm. That is 16 % wider in each direction, and the cells pack into a fixed interior, so the loss compounds: a volume that holds N 18650 cells holds roughly N × (18/21)² ≈ 0.73 N of 21700 once the holder spacing is counted. On a 117-cell Hailong that lands at 80.
Height compounds it further. A 21700 is 70 mm long against the 18650's 65 mm, so the interior length the block needs goes up as well — which matters because the same interior also has to house a BMS.
The same comparison, format by format
| Series | 18650, smallest | 18650, largest | 21700, smallest | 21700, largest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hailong | 52 | 117 | 30 | 80 |
| Downtube | 30 | 200 | 20 | 160 |
| Integrated / in-frame | — | 104 | — | 80 |
| Rear rack | — | 104 | — | 78 |
Ranges are the real spread across the moulds we hold, not one model. Every figure is the per-model maximum, read from the same data the series pages render, so it cannot drift out of step with them.
Why you would choose 21700 anyway
Because the cell is better, and the arithmetic above is the price of it:
- Higher capacity per cell. 21700 cells commonly run 4 000–5 000 mAh against 2 500–3 500 mAh for 18650, so you reach the same Ah with fewer cells and less weight.
- Lower internal resistance and better thermal behaviour, which matters at the currents a 13S or 20S pack draws.
- Fewer interconnects. A 13S5P pack needs 65 of whatever cell you choose; at higher per-cell capacity you may only need 13S3P at 39 cells to reach the same range, which changes the whole case calculation.
The trap is planning on 18650 numbers and then discovering the cells you can actually buy are 21700. That is the moment to re-run the case question rather than hope.
How to avoid the mistake
- Decide the cell format before the case. It changes the capacity answer by 20–32 %, which is larger than the difference between most adjacent moulds.
- Ask for the number in your format explicitly. "How many 21700 cells in the ALXxxx" — not "how many cells".
- Check that the figure is per-format. A listing quoting one number for a "18650 or 21700 compatible" case is quoting 18650. A supplier who can give you both numbers is working from actual drawings.
The 21700 housing range lists every mould that takes them, and the case selector lets you enter the format alongside the configuration so the two cannot be mixed up.

Cell type, series and parallel count is usually enough. If the answer is that none of our moulds fit, we will say so rather than sell you the nearest thing.
