E-bike battery cases for long-distance touring

Touring is a capacity problem before it is anything else, and the format that carries the most cells is not the one most builders reach for.

Who this is for: Pack builders supplying touring and audax frames, and riders speccing their own range build.

What this build actually constrains

Capacity first

Range comes from cells. Everything else is secondary until you have enough of them.

Removability matters more than usual

You will be charging in places that are not your workshop. A pack that lifts off the bike is worth real money.

Weather is not optional

Touring means rain. A sealed housing is a requirement, not an upgrade.

Worth knowing — the one to avoid here

Water Bottle

If the target is range, a bottle-boss case is the wrong end of the range. Above roughly 52 cells the format stops supporting the requirement and a downtube or rack case serves you better.

Questions we get about this build

How many cells do I need for a 100 km e-bike range?
It depends on assist level, rider weight and terrain more than on anything else, but as a working figure a 13S5P 21700 pack (65 cells, around 15 Ah at 48 V) is what most touring builds start from, and long-distance builds go to 78 or 104 cells on 18650.
Can I carry a second battery on a touring bike?
Yes, and a bottle-boss case is the usual choice for the second pack — it is the least intrusive mount and it can go on the seat tube rather than competing for down-tube space with the main battery.

Send us the build and we will say which format works

Frame envelope, cell type, series and parallel count is all we need. If the answer is that none of our moulds fit and it needs a new one, we will say that rather than sell you the nearest thing.
